Her Store, Her Story – Meet Stephanie Chetty, Owner of Heirlooms at Hillcrest Corner
“It’s been quite a journey!
My retail career began over three decades ago while I was still in high school, working as a casual at Markhams. That early start led to management roles after school, and in my early twenties, I was selected for a Merchandising Internship with the Edcon Group. I fell in love with the retail industry, especially once I moved into Corporate Retail as a Buyer and Planner, working with iconic brands like Edcon, Woolworths, Truworths, Foschini, and Nike SA.
After becoming a mother, I made the difficult decision to leave the corporate world. The constant travel and time away from my daughter made it hard to balance both roles. I knew I needed a change.
On 1 August 2023, my partner and I took a leap of faith and bought Heirlooms Gifts. The store has long been known for its antiques, collectables, and beautiful sterling silver jewellery. With my retail experience and his IT and project management background, we’ve poured our hearts into this new chapter.
Today, I manage the store’s daily operations, including buying, merchandising, and everything in between. My vision is to evolve Heirlooms into a more modern shopping experience while still honouring its rich heritage. I focus on sourcing quality, unique, and proudly South African artisanal pieces that tell a story. We’re changing the perception of heirlooms. They are no longer just treasures of the past, but meaningful keepsakes for future generations.
I’ve also expanded our sterling silver jewellery range by introducing more contemporary designs to appeal to a wider audience. It’s been a beautiful journey of turning a challenge into a new beginning, and I’m loving every minute of it. I’ve created a space where my passion for retail shines and where I can help customers find gifts that make their loved ones feel truly special.
I’m incredibly grateful to work alongside two phenomenal women, Lynn and Natasha, who share my passion and consistently deliver exceptional service to everyone who walks through our doors.
